Joni Salmela



Joni Salmela (b. 1995) is a  sound artist, composer and events producer  from Tampere, Finland, now based in Helsinki and Berlin.

Salmela’s work is characterized by his innovative approach to blending diverse sounds and uncovering connections between seemingly disparate elements, creating immersive experiences that resonate on multiple levels.
As a producer,  both in  music and events, Salmela likes to cross boundaries challenging different mediums and genres as well as himself to step outside of his comfort zone.

Salmela’s foundation is in classical music and he has evolved his artistry to encompass a wide range of genres and mediums, consistently seeking and creating connections between them. With a BA in Social Science, Salmela’s work is deeply influenced by social themes, seamlessly integrating cultural narratives into his projects. Currently studying Cultural Management, he continues to expand his expertise, bringing a blend of artistic and academic insight to the field.

Salmela has been involved as a composer, lyricist, producer as well as a mixer and recording artist on dozens of publications.  He is one of the founders and producers of the multidisciplinary art festival Lumina yearly taking place in Tampere, Finland. Producing Lumina Salmela’s main responsibilities are musical program and equality. In the sphere of performing arts, Salmela has worked as a sound designer, composer and musician in the performances Red Cues (2024, Berlin), Les Bonnes Bonnes (2023, Helsinki) and Etydejä rajan toiselta puolelta (2023, Tampere) building an ongoing and evolving artistic collaboration with performance artist Ilana Palmgren.
